Abstract:
This study investigates how aging affects written word production in bilinguals. Previous studies have shown that older adults tend to show weakened connections between word forms and their phonology/orthography during language production, as predicted by the Transmission Deficit Hypothesis (Burke et al., 1991). However, it remains unclear how such deficits would affect the language production system of bilinguals. To investigate this, we will conduct a study in which we compare the orthographic facilitation from distractors in a written picture-word interference task, which is a bilingual equivalent of the paradigm proposed by Cutting and Ferreira (1999). Concretely, younger and older French-English bilinguals will type the English names of pictures on the screen while ignoring a superimposed distractor word. Half of the targets will have inter-lingual homographic names (e.g., ‘coin’, which means ‘corner’ in French and ‘piece of money’ in English) and the other half will be non-homographs. There will be ...
